Fall Landscaping Tips: Planting Spring Bulbs
Continuing our fall landscaping tips posts, this our final week, we will be giving tips on planting spring bulbs so your garden is full of early flowers at the first sign of spring.
Spring flowering bulbs offer a reliable colorful display just when you need it most and they require very little effort. Here are a few tips for successful bulb planting.
Choose bulbs wisely. You want to avoid bulbs that are withered, spongy, or moldy. The general rule is the larger the bulb for its type, the more flowers. Small bulbs are less expensive but will have smaller or fewer flowers.
Location. Select an appropriate spot with full sun and well drained soil. Bulbs do not like sitting in wet soil. This is especially true when they are dormant in the summer. Choose to plant in a spot that's well-drained to prevent rotting.
Plant with the pointed side up. The pointed end is the stem. You may even be able to see some shriveled roots on the flatter side. If you really can't tell, don't worry about it. The stem will find it's own way, eventually!
Replace the soil on top of the bulbs. Water the bulbs after planting to help them settle in and close any air pockets. Through the fall and winter, you only need to worry about watering your bulbs if you’re having a particularly dry season. Come spring, you should be well rewarded for all your efforts.
